Now is the time for good men to rise to affirm their convictions.
As you are aware, there is a bill the Missouri House of Representatives is debating relating to Religious Freedom, SJR-39. This piece of legislation gives the people of Missouri the opportunity to vote this year on an amendment to the state Constitution that prohibits the government from coercing churches, pastors, institutions, organizations and artistic expressions in the wedding industry. In spite of the media sound bites, the bill does not give license for discrimination.
As you will see on the flyer below, there is a last minute push for passage of this bill in the House and we need to hold a rally for support April 19th at 2pm on the Statehouse lawn (if it rains, we will move inside).
Please excuse the last minute announcement. It is just the nature of legislative action. Although the Chamber of Commerce and several large corporations have opposed the measure, we and other faith groups need to marshal support that helps the House members understand that freedom of conscience trumps consumerism.
I would encourage you to come and bring a car or bus load with you. Please announce the rally in church Sunday. If you cannot come or send a group, please contact your state representative and graciously request that he/she would vote to pass the bill without amendments and give the people the opportunity to vote on the amendment. P.S. If you can’t find parking near the Capitol, you can park at the Baptist Building (400 E. High Street) and walk to Capitol (five blocks).
