Amos 2:6-16
Part 3 - Like a Roaring Lion

Like a Roaring Lion – Part 3 Amos 2:6-16 (read only 2:6-8 here) There are essentially seven judgment speeches against the nations (1:3-2:5).  Damascus (1:3-5) – Treating people as things.  Philistine cities (1:6-8) – Profit over people.  Tyre (1:9-10) – Failure to keep one’s word.  Edom (1:11-12) – Anger against God’s people.  Ammonites (1:13-15) – Ambition.  Moab (2:1-3) – A vengeful spirit.  Judah (2:4-5) – Rejecting the Word of God. • “For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?” (1 Peter 4:17). 1) We cannot be right with God and wrong with man (2:6-8). • So what are they doing? There may certainly be other ways of describing it, but they are sinning by covetousness, oppressing others, and being self-absorbed. • In other words, the people were being taken advantage of by the system that Israel had in place. The courts of the day were being used to oppress the poor instead of maintaining justice. We cannot be right with God and wrong with man. 2) We cannot erase the favor of God but we can forfeit the favor of God (2:9-11). • As a church, we are “new covenant” people. We belong to God through the shed blood of Jesus. Just because we’re in covenant, just because we are covenant people, just because we’re God’s people, doesn’t mean we can live as we please. • We’re not to live as we please but rather we’re to live as God pleases. • If we don’t follow through with honoring the Lord based on all he’s done for us, please understand he isn’t obligated to honor us with his favor. We cannot be right with God and wrong with man. We cannot erase the favor of God but we can forfeit the favor of God. 3) We cannot reject the truth of God’s will and devotion to God’s way without rejecting God himself (2:12
